Vegan Ice Cream at Van Leeuwen

One of my lovely roommates is on a strict no dairy diet and we have found it can be hard to find quality vegan ice cream for various roomie nights.  But to our luck, Anne was able to find this adorable little artisan ice cream shop in the South Street Seaport area of downtown Manhattan.

Fun fact: The South Street Seaport is the oldest location in New York and has been recently renovated to maintain the historic aspects.  The Seaport has wonderful restaurants, a fancy movie theatre, and cute cobbled streets for some very cute pictures.

“We started Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream in the Spring of 2008 out of a buttery yellow truck on the streets of NYC. We set out to revive the classic American ice cream truck and the art of traditional ice cream making using ingredients perfected by nature, not science. Van Leeuwen Classic and Vegan ice creams are made with just a handful of fresh ingredients. Each flavor is a celebration of some of the world’s best artisan producers and farmers both local and from around the world.”

Van Leeuwen now has locations all over New York City and Los Angeles.  My favorite location is on 224 Front Street New York, NY 10038, they are open daily from 12:00pm-11:00pm scooping up delicious ice cream both vegan and not.  There is seating for small groups, but if you’re in the mood for walking and eating the Seaport area is beautiful at all times of day.  Also,  they only accept credit or debit, so leave the cash at home.

Since I am one of the most indecisive people I know, I decided to get two scoops, one vegan; double concord grape, and the other a regular milk based ice cream, honeycomb.

Vegan Double Concord Grape: tasted like a blueberry pie, smooth, tart, sweet.  This was a Winter 2017 flavor so sadly it is no longer offered but Van Leeuwen always has new seasonal flavors to try!

Honeycomb: Made with a crunchy chewy, caramel candy made in house broken into chunks and folded into a delicious sweet cream base.  The ice cream gets its name from the honeycomb because its texture is crispy on the inside, chewy on the outside and has surprise ribbons of caramel throughout.

Vegan Honeycomb: Made with coconut cream, cashews, coconut oil, cocoa butter base the vegan honeycomb has all the same delicious toppings and mix ins as the original Honeycomb flavor.

Also, just down the street on Wall Street there are trees decorated for the Christmas season wrapped in lights.  I recommend walking by as it’s perfect for a cute picture.  Thanks Bek and Haley for modeling in all my mom photos!

Hope you enjoy another delicious Sleepless Sweets recommended location. Let me know in the comments below what your favorite flavors were.

Lots of love,

Hannah

The Cannoli at Grimmaldi’s

Three stories of pizza deliciousness on the corner store in DUMBO near New York City’s beautiful neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights.  Located on 1 Front Street underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, Grimaldi’s has been serving the best coal brick-oven pizza since 1991 with a history tracing back to the first American pizzeria in 1905.

“Coal-fired brick oven cooking gives pizza a unique smoky flavor and a crisp crust that is just not possible with gas, convection, or wood oven. Knowing coal-fired brick oven cooking is a dying art, we, at Grimaldi’s, want to ensure that future generations will be able to experience this distinctive and truly authentic pizza.”

The best part is, not only is the pizza fantastic, but Grimaldi’s dessert menu is delicious as well.  Not expecting to get dessert after such a filling meal, a group of friends and I went to this world-famous pizzeria to happily say they Grimaldi’s has delicious cannoli.

Cannoli is an Italian dessert made with a flaky crispy outer roll or tube “connola” it is then filled with a sweet crème filling and topped with a sprinkling of powdered sugar and cinnamon.  The cannoli at Grimaldi’s fit the bill perfectly and it was much bigger than the usual cannoli which is always good thing when it comes to dessert.

If you’re ever looking for the best pizza in New York City I say go to Grimmaldi’s.  For a 3 topping pizza to feed three and desserts for each of us it came out to around $50 including tip.  After your meal, (and your cannoli of course) I recommend walking to the Brooklyn Heights promenade no matter the time of day to get one of the most beautiful views of the New York City skyline you will ever see.  I hope you guys get to enjoy this little place of New York and love it just as much as I do.

Lots of love,

Hannah

Southern Holiday Milkshake in New York City and Beyond

Peppermints, chocolates, and whipped cream, a Sleepless Sweets dream.  The best part about finding holiday sweets not exclusive to New York is that you guys all over the United States can have a taste.  Chick-fil-A’s Peppermint Chocolate Chip Milkshake is my favorite go-to holiday shake in the city and around the country!

I was recently reading one of my favorite blogs; A Southerner’s Guide to NYC and heard that Chick-fil-A is currently constructing its biggest location in the nation in New York City just steps away from where I go to school in New York’s Financial District.

Chick-fil-A is a Georgia based fast food chain with a focus on quality ingredients, amazing customer services, and being closed on Sunday’s to give their employees a day rest.  They serve the original chicken sandwhich and top quality chicken nuggs.  Side note, their sweet tea and lemonade are the BEST.  Chick-fil-A is changing the fast food industry as we know it with their smiling service, and Ice Dream machines that always work.

Chick-fil-A’s Peppermint Chocolate Chip Milkshake is simply holiday deliciousness.  Made with their in-house classic soft serve, Ice Dream, peppermint syrup, crushed candy canes, and chocolate chips!  Blended to perfection and topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Don’t miss this!

Sadly, as a seasonal/limited time only milkshake, Chick-fil-A only offers this flavor between November 20 and January 6th so be sure to get yours before you start your New Year’s Resolutions.

If you happen to be in New York for this fabulous treat, there are currently two other great locations that will get you fed happily and with a smile.  The locations are both on the Avenue of Americas, on the corners of 37th and 46th.

Lots of love,

Hannah

P.S. Fun fact: That capital A in Chick-fil-A is on purpose – it means “grade A top quality.”

Italian Fruit Sorbet in New York City

Have you ever had a sorbet so good the fruit melted in your mouth and it almost tasted like you had just picked the berry off the bush at its finest moment?  I have only experienced this a few times in my life, but trust me when I say it is very memorable.  The best part my friends is that I had this very experience at Grom Gelato in New York City.

How To: Homemade Pumpkin Pie

Cinnamon, turkey, sweet potatoes galore.  A week later I am still reminiscing on a Thanksgiving filled with happy bellies, joyful hearts, and shared stories of all our times apart.  One of my favorite family traditions growing up was making pumpkin pie with my mom starting from scratch and coming out with the perfect pie that my sisters and I would eventually eat for breakfast the next morning.

Pumpkin Spice Cupcake in New York’s NoLita

Sadly, Thanksgiving is over, but November is not which means this is probably the last opportunity I get to feature my favorite fall treat before the upswing of Christmas sweets, treats, music, and overall joyful spirit.  It has been a month filled with things to be thankful for and I hope you all were able to spend time with family, friends, and good food.
