Vegan Ice Cream at Van Leeuwen

One of my lovely roommates is on a strict no dairy diet and we have found it can be hard to find quality vegan ice cream for various roomie nights.  But to our luck, Anne was able to find this adorable little artisan ice cream shop in the South Street Seaport area of downtown Manhattan.


Fun fact: The South Street Seaport is the oldest location in New York and has been recently renovated to maintain the historic aspects.  The Seaport has wonderful restaurants, a fancy movie theatre, and cute cobbled streets for some very cute pictures.


“We started Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream in the Spring of 2008 out of a buttery yellow truck on the streets of NYC. We set out to revive the classic American ice cream truck and the art of traditional ice cream making using ingredients perfected by nature, not science. Van Leeuwen Classic and Vegan ice creams are made with just a handful of fresh ingredients. Each flavor is a celebration of some of the world’s best artisan producers and farmers both local and from around the world.”

Van Leeuwen now has locations all over New York City and Los Angeles.  My favorite location is on 224 Front Street New York, NY 10038, they are open daily from 12:00pm-11:00pm scooping up delicious ice cream both vegan and not.  There is seating for small groups, but if you’re in the mood for walking and eating the Seaport area is beautiful at all times of day.  Also,  they only accept credit or debit, so leave the cash at home.


Since I am one of the most indecisive people I know, I decided to get two scoops, one vegan; double concord grape, and the other a regular milk based ice cream, honeycomb.

Vegan Double Concord Grape: tasted like a blueberry pie, smooth, tart, sweet.  This was a Winter 2017 flavor so sadly it is no longer offered but Van Leeuwen always has new seasonal flavors to try!

Honeycomb: Made with a crunchy chewy, caramel candy made in house broken into chunks and folded into a delicious sweet cream base.  The ice cream gets its name from the honeycomb because its texture is crispy on the inside, chewy on the outside and has surprise ribbons of caramel throughout.

Vegan Honeycomb: Made with coconut cream, cashews, coconut oil, cocoa butter base the vegan honeycomb has all the same delicious toppings and mix ins as the original Honeycomb flavor.

Also, just down the street on Wall Street there are trees decorated for the Christmas season wrapped in lights.  I recommend walking by as it’s perfect for a cute picture.  Thanks Bek and Haley for modeling in all my mom photos!
